Pancakes with Troll Slobbers

Toast decided to have himself a plentiful helping of
pumpkin pancakes with an abundance of apple maple syrup
and a dollop of heavy cream, he affectionately called "Troll Slobbers."

Still on the hunt for a publisher for Toast. Perhaps April will be the month!

My portfolio will be on display at the
SCBWI TEXAS SPRING CONFERENCE.

I have my fingers crossed.

enjoy

I just love Toast! I'd love to know some of your creative process (noticed you sculpted a model). Do you paint first and then scan and manipulate on the computer? Is it all created on computer (if you don't mind sharing)?

Anyway, the result is awesome - I'll watch for it in bookstores.

Thanks for the kind words.
Actually I haven't used the sculpture for any ref. In fact I just got the finished piece a few days ago.

I normally will sketch an illustration first on paper to get an idea of composition and flow. Then I scan and lay down flat colors. After I have the simple shading done I use alot of custom brushes I have made myself by photographing pastel, watercolor, and oil brush strokes on canvas or paper. This, I find gives me a little tooth to the computer brushes and gives the art more of a hand crafted look.

I have, on occasion, printed the art and gone back over it with color pencil or small amounts of paint for highlights and texture.
Then I simply rescan and print.

It's somewhat of a cumbersome process, but one that has given me great results.

:) Hope that answers your question.

Hey - thanks for the encouragement on my blog and for elaborating here on your process. I work in a bookstore and I'll keep an eye out for Toast in the future. Let us know how things go at the conference.

I just noticed that cute picture of toast with a pat of butter on it on hanging behind Toast. As always, I love it. Best of luck finding someone. I know the right publisher is out there for you. Maybe you could start going to the publishing houses when they open, serve some real toast when you pitch Toast!
